About the programme
Sustainable Land Management from Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) encompasses a variety of different aspects, such as the physics of the soil, meteorology and natural hazards.
Urban Land Engineering: This specialization puts the focus land management in urbanised areas. Students learn to combine applied scientific knowledge and advanced technical competence in urban aspects of soil and water management combining GIS, earth observation techniques and modelling techniques. The students will specifically be trained in surface water modelling techniques using Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and Storm Water Management Model software packages in combination with soil and water management techniques.
Land and Groundwater Management: The main subject Land and Groundwater Management has a strong focus on land, soil water and groundwater and their management. Graduates acquire the knowledge and skills to understand the Sustainable behavior of soil water and groundwater, against the overall background of land, as well as the development of groundwater quality under natural and/or human-impacted conditions using field, map, laboratory or remote sensing data. They have the scientific knowledge to use and manage soil water and groundwater in a sustainable way, and to optimize land use under different natural and environmental conditions.
Career
Employment can be found in the fields of:
- soil management
- environment assessment
- water management, including water supply and control
- stability of taluds and excavations
- use of soil as construction material
- coastal development
- erosion and sediment transport
Programme Structure
- The first year of the two-year, full time programme provides a basis in Sustainable Land Management, with a main subject in either Soil Science or Urban Land Engineering. The second year offers specialised courses in one of the two main subjects.
- The course curriculum of the first year and of the main subject in ‘Soil Science’ of the second year is organised at the Ghent University, whereas all courses of the main subject in Urban Land Engineering of the second year are organised at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Students in Sustainable Land Management have to reside in Brussels during the second year
- The academic year starts the last week of September.
